Master hoof care with professional craftsmanship.
In the Professional Training in Hoof Trimming, you will learn how a hoof trimmer works professionally and how to advise farmers on hoof health at a dairy farm.

How it works

  • Register via the green button on this page.After registration, you will have an intake interview, during which it will be determined whether you have sufficient practical experience to start this training.
  • Following this intake, you will be officially admitted to the professional training.
  • If the result is insufficient, you will be advised not to participate and/or to gain more hours of hoof care experience before joining. A second screening may then be necessary, and possibly entry into the next group.
  • At the end of the professional training, there will be an exam. If you pass, you will be officially certified as a Professional Cattle Hoof Trimmer.

Essence

Essence

During the initial week of the practical portion, you will learn how to handle a knife and shears and how to treat hooves functionally. Later, the use of an angle grinder will be covered. The theoretical part addresses how to recognize hoof and foot disorders and their causes. You will also learn how to advise farmers on improving hoof health at the dairy farm. Additionally, several sessions with speakers on current topics will be included. The training is conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University.

During the training, the following topics will be covered:

  • Practical hoof care at various dairy farms
  • Maintenance and use of hoof care equipment
  • Application of hoof blocks
  • Detection of lameness and risk factors
  • Working safely
  • Structure and function of the lower limb
  • Identifying and explaining causes and farm measures for preventing or treating disorders
  • Attention to specific hoof disorders
  • When should a veterinarian intervene?
  • Advising farmers using the “Grip on Hooves” project approach
